วัดพะเนียงแตก สร้างขึ้นมาราวประมาณ พ.ศ. 2334 เดิมชื่อ“วัดปทุมคงคา” ชื่อนี้เข้าใจว่าหลวงพ่อทาเป็นผู้ตั้งชื่อเพราะอุโบสถหลังเก่าหลวงพ่อทาเป็นผู้สร้าง แต่เดิมไม่ใช่ชื่อ "วัดพะเนียงแตก" เหตุมาจากที่หลวงพ่อทาชอบเล่นพลุไฟพะเนียง วันหนึ่งในงานเทศกาลประจำปีของวัด ท่านเอามือไปปิดปากพลุไม่ให้พลุออกมาทางปาก จึงระเบิดออกทางด้านข้าง แต่ท่านไม่ได้รับบาดเจ็บใดๆ เลย ที่ทำเช่นนี้ ท่านต้องการให้พวกนักเลงหัวไม้เกรงขาม จะได้ปกครองและอบรมให้เป็นคนดีได้ ซึ่งก็เป็นดังนั้น ในงานเทศกาลประจำปีของวัด ไม่เคยต้องอาศัยตำรวจเลย เพราะไม่มีเหตุการณ์ร้ายเกิดขึ้นสักครั้งเดียว จนชาวบ้านให้ฉายาว่า "หลวงพ่อพะเนียงแตก" และเรียกชื่อวัดว่า "วัดพะเนียงแตก"
