ชื่อ “วัดญาณเวศกวัน” นี้ พระพรหมคุณาภรณ์ ได้ตั้งขึ้น โดยให้มีความหมายที่แสดงถึง จุดหมายแห่งการบำเพ็ญศาสนกิจของวัด ว่ามุ่งเน้นให้เป็นแหล่งศึกษาค้นคว้า เพื่อเสริมสร้างความรู้ในพระธรรมวินัย และปฏิบัติให้เจริญธรรมเจริญปัญญา ตลอดจนบรรลุญาณสูงขึ้นไปตาม
คำว่า “วัดญาณเวศกวัน” มีความหมายโดยพยัญชนะว่า ป่าที่มีเรือนแห่งความรู้ หรือ ป่าของผู้เข้าสู่ญาณ “วัดญาณเวศกวัน” มีความหมายโดยประสงค์ว่า วัดที่มีป่า และ เป็นที่เหมาะแก่การเข้าไป แสวงหาความรู้เจริญธรรมเจริญปัญญา
